Bernie Mac Dies of Pneumonia at 50

Bernie Mac, the famous comedian, writer and producer died Saturday morning in his hometown of Chicago. He had suffered from a severe case pneumonia due to a lung malfunction called sarcoidosis disease. Mac was only 50 years old.

Sarcoidosis is is an inflammatory disease that can affect almost any organ in the body. It causes heightened immunity, which means that a person’s immune system, which normally protects the body from infection and disease, overreacts, resulting in damage to the body’s own tissues. Unfortunately for Bernie Mac, his immune system was too much damaged to even fight it. It was also stated that his hospitalization was more serious than what everybody had thought. He was put into intensive care 7 days before anyone, even the media was aware of his health conditions; because Bernie Mac’s family asked for privacy in this matter. People reports:

The sister-in-law says Mac’s inflammatory lung disease contributed to his death. “He had sarcoidosis, but it was in remission,” she says. “But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection … He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that’s where the pneumonia came from.”
She reveals that Mac – having trouble breathing and running a fever – was actually hospitalized on July 24, eight days before the date given for his admittance. The actor was diagnosed with pneumonia and immediately placed on a ventilator.

He bacame a household name when he started doing several episodes from many comedy shows including Moesha, Mad TVSaturday Night Live and Comedy Def Jam, shows where he was a frequent performer. He was also a close friend of the richest woman in the industry, Oprah Winfrey, for he has graced the show more than a couple of times. Another one is a huge stint as Bosley in the much-celebrated Charlie’s Angel’s Full Throttle with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu.
